Can you believe that there's such a thing as the 'Best Illusion of the Year' contest?
Well, luckily for all of us, there is. It takes place in Naples, Florida, and from that great convergence of visual researchers comes this list of the top 10 coolest optical illusions of the year, as reported by New Scientist Magazine.
The winner of the top prize was a color wheel that demonstrates a phenomenon known as 'change blindness', which is basically an explanation for how motion affects perceived changes in color, shape and shade. There's a nifty little animation that will help it all make sense, and that might also make you go back several times to figure out just how it works.
But there are plenty other amazing displays of optical trickery... including morphing faces, hidden kisses, tricky triangles, and more.
Um, have we ever mentioned the fact that science is cool?
