Some of the best stories ever written involve a character who has to make a very tough decision. As readers, we really get to know what's on the inside of a person when we watch them struggle with that dilemma. This month, you get to practice this...

It doesn't have to be a long story, but take some time to think about this scenario and how you would write it. Your character (male, female, doesn't matter) has accidentally discovered that their best friend is not going to make the sports team (basketball, soccer, football, baseball, doesn't matter). In fact, your character is getting the last spot on the team.

The best friend is convinced that they've made it, and is even talking with your character about riding to practice together, buying equipment together, etc. Your character doesn't know if they should break the news, or wait to let them find out from the coach. And, to make matters worse, the friend is planning a party for everyone on the team.

What to do? If they don't tell the friend, it will be embarrassing to have to cancel the party. But, if they tell, they're afraid the best friend will hold it against them personally.

There are a million other possible dilemmas you could create; this is just one. The bottom line is that tough decisions always define your characters' personalities, just as they define yours in real life. How will this choice affect not only your character, but their relationship with the friend?
