You may remember our friends over at Preston Middle School in Fort Collins. They were the first-ever in-school program partner of The Big Brain Club, and they've since gone on to win a state science Olympiad and a major national award from Intel.
Forever ambitious, Preston has put together a new program that stretches all the way across the world. Led by media specialist Tracey Winey, Preston students gather before school in the morning -- voluntarily -- to discuss books, culture and life via videoconference with kids from a school called Little Children of the Philippines. You can watch videos from some of their discussions right here.
Preston is also home to the STEM Summer Institute, where students get incredible first-hand instruction in areas of science that you normally might associate with college projects. It's impressive stuff, and up until now it's been mostly reserved for kids from Colorado or nearby states.
Preston has agreed to host four students (and two chaperones) from Little Children of the Philippines at this year's STEM Summer Institute. They've raised enough money to cover the cost of admission, as well as some other big expenses. The one remaining piece of the puzzle is travel. Airfare from Dumaguete City to the U.S. is not exactly built into your average middle school budget.
This is the part where you come in. Preston has partnered with the good people at Rotary International, and as part of the Rotary Miles Donation program, you can donate your United Airlines miles in order for the students of Dumaguete to fly to Colorado and take part in the STEM Summer Institute.
Each ticket requires 80,000 miles, but don't let that number intimidate you. They are already well on their way, and every little bit helps. So if you've got any unused United Airlines miles, please consider filling out this form and submitting it via fax or email to the contact provided.
We'll keep you posted as the deadline nears. Thank you!
