Big Brain Club Partner School Wins State Science Olympiad, Heads to Nationals

Looks like Colorado's Preston Middle School, the first-ever in-school program partner of The Big Brain Club, had a big weekend.

A team of students from the Fort Collins STEM school (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), won the Colorado State Science Olympiad on Sunday. For their efforts, they now move on to the National Competition in Madison, Wisconson, which begins May 18.

But wait, there's more! Preston actually had three teams in the 31-team competition, and all of them finished in the top 12 overall. It's a real testament to the work of the students and teachers at Preston, as well as to their Science Olympiad coaches, Mary Klass and Amy Schmer.

The students on the winning team were: Joshua Morse, Ethan Coldren, Natalie Spencer, Alicia Guler, Morgan Riley, Jon Sharp, Andy Meger, Alex Roerty, Amanda Field, Stephanie Suinn, Justin McGowen, Dan Stubbs, Joe Brauch, and Alexa Smith.

The other teams -- and did we mention that they all finished in the Top 12? -- consisted of Drew Henninger, Chris Pyle, Jared Perlic, Rachel Poulsen, Paige Murphy, Cori Howlett, Colton Padilla, Robert Grosulescu, Alex Wood, Alex McBride, Neil Rowen, Adrian Pullaro, Bryan Wilson, Izzy Wallace, Peyton Walker, Elizabeth Woolner, Kevin Sullivan, Kevin Castell, Nathan Chapman, Ben Allsup, Zane Mabry, Adam Miller,  Aidan Baack, Evan Bergo, Tristan Faust, Bridger Keally, Kyle Senior, and Kira Simonson.

The Big Brain Club obviously cannot take credit for the incredible work of these students at the Science Olympiad, but we were thrilled to see that no fewer than eight of the authors featured in our inaugural book, The Big Brain Club at Preston Middle School, are included in the names above. Talk about some well-rounded kids!

Good luck to the Preston team as it moves ahead toward Nationals next month. Le's go Pumas!

I'm a proud parent of the 2nd place winner in Ornathology, who was also published in the Big Brain book - way to go, Preston! So awesome for all the kids who work so hard, and especially to Mrs. Klass for all the thankless hours that she invests in this. We love you, Mary!

Congrats Kathy and good job, Preston! And congrats on the second in state in ornithology. When our students are both in high school, maybe that event will come back into rotation again and we can have a rematch at the C level. We're up for it. I hope you all enjoyed Wisconsin! Preston finished in the top half of the B teams and that's something to be really proud of. And the ornithology team from Preston earned a very impressive 15th! Awesome job! Congrats! Looking forward to the challenging competition at State again this year!
