Remember reading To Kill a Mockingbird when you were in school? How about The Great Gatsby or The Scarlet Letter? Chances are that you read at least one of those titles as part of an assigned reading program when you were a teenager. But there's a controversial movement afoot, as more and more schools are allowing students to choose their own books in hopes of encouraging young people to take a more active interest in what they read.
This first showed up on our radar via this article, penned by a librarian in Fredricksburg, VA. She's kind enough to reference a certain young adult book series that some of her own readers seem to enjoy. But the original source was this August 30 New York Times Article by Motoko Rich, which goes into greater detail to present both sides of a touchy issue.
Both articles are a worthwhile read, but we'll follow the lead of the schools that are featured within and let you decide for yourself which is right for you.
